bullet  General Notes:

Joseph DeJarnette was in his 75th year when he died, just three month s short of his birthday. Daniel DeJarnette gave his exact death date a s July 31, 1824 in the family Bible. His will was recorded on August 9 , 1824, with Daniel DeJarnette and Elliott DeJarnette qualifying as th e executors of his will. Joseph's eldest son, John, had died before th at this time, and Joseph had also lost his daughter, Mary. Although th ere are no early markers with with which verify this, it is probable t hat Joseph and Mary were buried at "Spring Grove" in the family gravey ard near the Mattaponi River.

Joseph served in the Caroline Militia for the duration of the Revoluti on. In December 1777, Joseph DeJarnatt and Samuel Norment took oaths t o the commonwealth as ensigns in the militia. They were assigned to th e 13th Company under George Guy, Captain and Joseph Richardson, FirstL ieutenant. In March 1779, Joseph took an oath to the Commonwealth asa second Lieutenant in Capt. Richardson's Company.

*Note: Researchers of the Dejarnatt famiyl history have attributed tw o other daughters, Elizabeth and Sophia, to Joseph and Mary Dejarnatt . Sophia Dejarnatt married Edward Weathers, as his second wife, and be cause of this may have been thought to have been the sister of Mary, h is first wife. There can be little doubt that Joseph's wife Mary Hampt on Dejarnatt died prior to the writing of her father's will and the pa pers concerning the suit over his estate are extant and seen to enumer ate explicitly the children of Mary Hampton Dejarnatt, it does not see m likely that there were other children of that marriage, that survive d until April 1801. Neither Sophia or Elizabeth were mentioned in thew ill of John Hampton.
