General Notes:
The will of Daniel DeJarnette has survived because his son, John, oneo f the executors, took a certified copy to the clerk of the court in 18 66, to be recorded. The original will, recorded April 14, 1851, as wel l as the will book that had contained the original will, were destroye d by fire in April 1865.
Daniel wrote his will on September 1, 1840, and left quite a large est ate. He lef legacies of land to his wife, in her lifetime, and to hisc hildren, amounting to 6188 acres. The land extended from DeJarnatt'sMi ll and Maraccosic Creek southward. It lay on both sides of the stage r oad from Bowling Green to Burke's Mill. He left legacies of his slave s for his wife's use and to his children, amounting to 100. Since he l eft twenty Negroes to each of his three unmarried daughters, he had pr obably already given a dowry to each of his married daughters, Jane an d Elizabeth. He added a codicil to his will in March 1841 statingthat his daughter Jane, who married George Tyler, had died. He left his so n Daniel Coleman, the tract of land "whereon I now live, on the southw est side of the Old Stage Road, containing about 950 acres."
