General Notes:
NOTE: Without the diligent and extensive information collecting and r ecord preparation of Vivian Cash Miller (Hillsboro, Illinois), this da tabase would not have been put together as it is now. The recorded it ems would have been there, documentation would have been found (eventu ally). But - it could have taken years and the rich, family history w ould not have been uncovered. It is to Mrs. Miller (daughter of Edwar d and Bessie Curry Cash) and her late husband that many Cash descendan ts can be grateful. Thank you, Vivian -- family history might very po ssibly have been lost forever without your dedication!
The CASH Family . . . . .
The first known CASH in America was a William Cash from Scotland, a ma riner who settled in Salem, Massachusetts about 1645. On one of hisr eturn voyages from England/Scotland on his brigantine "The Good Inten t", he brought with him a favorite nephew, son of his brother, who wa s also named William Cash, born in Scotland circa 1653. At his uncle' s urging, this younger Wiliam Cash went down into Virginia, settling i n Westmoreland County about 1673. This mariner's (William Cash, "TheE migrant") descendants spread into Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New York and as far as Pennsylvania by 1850. This is the William Cash we are descended from. (Thomas Cash who our line comes from lived in Sal em, Massachusetts prior to settling in Albermale County, VA.)
WILLIAM CASH, the nephew (aka The Emigrant), came to Tidewater, Virgin ia about 1673 and was the first CASH to settle in that colony.
Along with all our CASH relatives, there is one who is known throughou t the country music industry -- JOHNNY CASH, the "Man in Black". Hisr elationship to our line was told in his autobiography, "The Man in Bla ck", published in 1975. He is descended from William Cash, the Scotti sh Mariner, just as we are. William came to Westmoreland Co, Virgini a circa 1673. He also lived in Amherst and Bedford Counties in Virgin ia for 100 years. A son MOSES CASH moved to Henry County, Virginia i n 1810 and was one of the first settlers there. The old Cash homestea d was still seen there in 1995, although it was in ruins. REUBEN CAS H was the son of Moses Cash and grandson of William. Following the bu rning of Atlanta and the pillage and sacking of the plantations in tha t area, Reuben put his family in an ox-drawn wagon and in 1866 homeste aded in Arkansas. Reuben and his wife had a good size family, but onl y one son, WILLIAM HENRY CASH became a Baptist minister and married Re becca. He was named for William Cash and Henry Co., Virginia. Willia m and Rebecca were parents of 12 children. Their youngest son, RAY CA SH, was the father of Johnny. Other siblings were Reba, and Jack. I n interviews, Johnny tells that his family were share-croppers and hes pent much of his early life near Dyess, Arkansas. He picked cotton al ong with the rest of them.
