Hardin County, Kentucky was formed in 1793. It is located in the Penn yrile region of the state, elevation ranges from 383 to 1017 feet abov e sea level. In 1990 the county population was 89,240 in a land areao f 628 square miles, an average of 142.1 people per square mile. Theco unty seat is Elizabethtown. Elizabethtown was founded in 1795 and names for the wife of Colonel An drew Hynes. An earlier settlement had been known as Severns Valley, f or John Severns, a local settler and surveyor. The first post officeo pened in 1804 and may have first been known as Hardin Court House. Th e population in 1990 was 18,167. Kentucky was admitted to the Union on Friday, June 1, 1972. Seceded W ednesday, November 20, 1861. Capital: Frankfort. Motto: United WeS tand, Divided We Fall.
