Thomas was born about 1714, removed to Tarborough in Edgecombe Co., No rth Carolina, prior to 1754. He was appointed Tabacco Inspector in tha t year and held the position for 16 years. He was a merchant in Tarbor ough. Later he bought a plantation on the Tar River near the plantatio n of Thomas Harrell. Thomas Spell married Elizabeth Jones.
