James Houchins was in the War of 1812, Enlisted in the Virginia Militi a at Giles Courthouse, Giles County, Virginia, serving as a private i n a company designated as Capt. James Hobson's and Capt. David Hudson 's Company 4th Virginia Regiment, in the command known as "The Giles T roops," his service commenced 16 July 1814, and he was paid 13 Februar y, 1815, and marched with the British until the end of the war in 1815 .
James married Molly Harvey dau of Benjamin and Susan Ballard Harvey, i n 1798. In 1810 he moved his with his family to Crump's Bottom on NewR iver, Giles County, VA., now Summers Co., W.VA. He lived in Crump's Bo ttom many years, but later in life, after his wife's death, he returne d to Monroe County, where he lived among his children until his death . He is buried in Keaton graveyard near his old home of early days.
1850 census for Mercer Co., VA 42nd district lists James Houchins, Sr . age 75 years, living with son Thomas Houchins and wife Nancy. Notes : States the James Sr, was illiterate.
