Edward first appears in the Goochland Co., records in May 17, 1737, mu ch of the records of this county were destroyed. The first record isa deed. It may have been shortly after the death of his father, Edward. At that time he purchased land from Henry Webb and his wife Elizabeth . The deed states that Edward was living on the land at that time lyin g on the north side of the James River upon Little Lickinghole Creekan d having 250 acres. His neighbors were George Payne, Thomas Sammons, J osias Payne, and Allen Frazier. He acquired other tracts of land in Go ochland County in St. James Parish Northam.
Edward Houtchens made his will the 7th day of December, 1762, and it w as filed for probate Feb. 19, 1765. In the name of God Amen, I Edward Houtches of the Parish of St. JamesN ortham in the county of Goochland being sick and weak in body but ofpe rfect mind and memory. Thanks be to Almighty God Have thought Fitt of disposing of my worldly state. First I Bequeath my Soul to God, secondly my body to the Earth to be b uried according to the Discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioneda nd as for such worldly estate wherewith hath pleased Almighty God tobl ess me with after my just debts and funeral charges are paid I givedem ise and dispose in the following manner and form. Item 1, I give to my beloved wife Aner (Hannah) Houtchens all and sing ular my moveable estate during her life or widowhood and after her dec ease then to be equally divided among all her children then surviving. Item I give to John Clements my son-in-law the plantation whereon my s on John Houtchens formerly lived with the third part of three hundreda nd fifty acres joining the said plantation. Item I give my son Charles and the plantation whereon he now lives wit h with the third part of the said tract above mentioned. Item I give to my son Francis Houtchens the plantation whereon I now l ive with his third part of the land above mentioned. I appoint my two sons Charles and Francis Houtchens My whole and soldE xecutors of this my Will and Testament as Witness my hand and seal thi s Seventh day of December, 1762.
