Oliver Ballard Collection, Monroe County, VA Ballards letter written t o A.E. SMith by L.N. Ballard 2-6-1828 and a recounting by Smith in th e Monroe Mail: Oliver Ballard was the son of Willis (1791-1880) and g s of William, ggs of Philip and Ann "Nancy" Johnson Ballard.
This family was supposedly thought to have come from Scotland and thep arents William Ballard and Ann Johnson, according the Margaret Ballard 's book, since then there have been discrepencies in her work and nodo cumentation to the effect that they ever lived in the area of Monroe o r Orange Co., VA.
West Virginian's in the Revolution references to sons Philip and Willi am Ballard. Philip Ballard, VA Pension file #23272, it is stated he wa s born in Albermarle County, VA ca 1757, enlisted in one of those coun ties, served 2 years as a private in the VA line; applied for a pensio n August 21, 1832 Logan Co., KY. Certificate was issued 1833 in favoro f widow, Mary, as Philip had died April 13, 1833. Land Bounty warrant for 100 acres granted March 12, 1833.
William: served in VA militia with other brothers and was in battle o f Yorktown, Oct. 19, 1781; he died near the Shumate home on Indian Cre ek, September 1799 and was buried on the (Robert) Cummings farms nearW ikel Post Office, Monroe Co., VA.
Philip married Ann Nancy Johnson about 1733 in Orange Co., Virginia. (Ann Nancy Johnson was born about 1715 in poss. Spotsylvannia Co., VA and died in Orange Co., VA.)
