Allen Houchins was a soldier in the 30th Battalion Va Sharpshooters; P vt. Vawter's Battery/Co C. Enlisted 3/26/1862 at Union, Monroe Co., VA . He had been a private in Co E. 166th Militia. Present until absent s ick at home on 12/31/62 roll. Present sick on 2/28/1863 roll. Discharg ed 5/2/1863, age 35 years, resident of Monroe Co., VA. height, 6'0 1/2 ", fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, farmer, discharged for irre clacible (sp) discoloration of the left shoulder. Enlisted in 26th VA . Batn. 7/25/1864 at Dublin, VA. Sick at hospital and returned to dut y since the last month on 10/31/1864 muster roll. Paroled at Charlesto n, W.VA on 6/12/1865; age 37, 6'0, florid complexion, brown hair, gra y eyes, born 9/19/1827 at Crumps Bottom, Monroe Co., VA. Died 3/30/190 6 at Indian Mills, Monroe Co., W.VA. Buried in Indian Mills Cemetary,I ndian Mills, Summers Co., W.VA. Married Deliah Keaton in 1851 and had 8 children. He was a millwright and carpenter. Listed on the 1860 Monr oe Co., census as age 32, farmer, married to Deliah with 2 children. Allen lived at Indian Mills for many years and was an honorable carpen ter and millwright. His two sons, Henry and John, were both millwright s and millers and who, with George W. Leftridge and Louis Witt, erecte d the lower mill and were the owners at one time.
