Source: From Houchin Ancestry by Barty Wyatt, Princeton Times, Princet on, W.VA: Edward Houchins and family moved to Patrick county about 1791, and rem ained there until 1795. His next move took him to Greenbrier County (n ow Monroe County). Edward died in 1800 as a soldier in Captain EdmundC urd's Company of the Goochland Militia, which joined the Southern Arm y and in the memorable action in which General Gates was defeated nea r Camden, in South Carolina. On August 16, Edward Houchin received a w ound in his arm which so disabled him that he could not return home un til November 15, of the same year. The following are tow letters conce rning the military service of Edward Houchins. I do certify that Edward Houchins was a soldier in my company of milit ia from Goochland to S. Ward in General Stevens Brigade and was wounde d in action in General Gate's defeat. Given under my hand this 21st Ma y, 1799. Edmund Curd, Captain. I also certify that he did not return h ome, being detained by his wound until the 15th of November, 1780. Edm und Curd, Captain, Nathan S. Morris, Major, 4th Regiment, Virginia Mil itia. The second letter: I do hereby certify that Edward Houchins was a soldier in Captain Edmu nd Curd's Company of the Virginia Militia, that he marched Goochland C ourthouse in the month of June 1780, and perhaps was seen by me everyd ay until August that same year, that he was in line of march that day . He was a faithful and good soldier, perhaps as good as any in Genera l Stephen's Brigade, He was reported missing and said to have been wou nded in the action called Gate's defeat. Edward Houchins named as father of James in History of Monroe Co., VA , by Owen Morton. It said that they settled in 1795 in the area that b ecame Monroe Co., VA. and that James had a brother Bennett.
