Obituary for Jane Spell:
Jane, the youngest daughter of William and Nancy Spell, was born Apri l 28, 1854, near Sulphur Springs, Indiana, and departed this life at S piceland, Indiana, February 15, 1926. Age 71 years, 9 months and 17 da ys. She was deprived by death of a father's love and care at an earlya ge. Her education was received in the common schools, not many institu tions of higher learning being accessible to all students at that earl y date. On October 11, 1875, she joined in marriage to Peyton Ballard , of Henry Co., and to them were born seven children, six of whom, thr ee sons and three daughters, survive. Mrs. Sarah Shaffer, an older sis ter, still lives to mourn the dear departed. Seventeen grandchildren a nd numerous nieces and nephews who loved and honored her in life, wil l ever cherish her memory as a sacred legacy.
She accepted Christian faith and to a friend who was with her when he r body was racked by pain, she said, whether I live or die all is wel l with me.
Jane Ballard was a kind neighbor, a loyal friend, and abounding in wor ks of benevolence, in her benefactions she closely resembled Dorcas,a worthy Bible character, who gave much time and skill in the constructi on of garments for the needy.
She was a friend to truth, a soul sincere. In action faithful, in hono r clear, she broke no promise, served no private end. She gained no ti tle, but lost no friend. She loved her home, and often expressed the w ish that she might live and die in it, and from it might be borne to h er last resting place. It is a comforting thought that after seventy-t wo years of active and almost tireless industry, this dear one, just a t the dawn of a new day, passed quietly and peacefully through the gat eway of death into life eternal, to receive the reward of life well sp ent."
Jane married Peyton Everett Ballard, son of Aaron Ballard and Nancy Pearson, on Oct 11, 1875 in Henry Co., Indiana. (Peyton Everett Ballard was born on Feb 24, 1845 in Wayne Co., Indiana and died on Apr 9, 1903 in Henry Co., Indiana.)
